However, despite the unprecedentedcircumstances, graduates of Henderson State University received theirdiplomas with pride and hope for the future.
Henderson StateUniversity, located in Arkadelphia, Arkansas, is a public liberalarts university that serves over 3,000 undergraduate and graduatestudents. The university offers more than 60 undergraduate majors and10 graduate programs across various fields, including business,education, arts and humanities, and science and mathematics. Everyyear, hundreds of students graduate from Henderson State University,ready to start their journey into the professional world.
However, 2020 and2021 proved to be exceptional years for universities worldwide,including Henderson State University. The COVID-19 pandemic forcedthe university to suspend in-person classes and switch to virtual andhybrid formats, resulting in an uncertain and challenging couple ofyears for both faculty and students. The pandemic also postponedgraduation ceremonies, which meant that graduating students wouldn'thave the opportunity to walk across the stage, receive theirdiplomas, and celebrate their achievements with their loved ones.
Despite thechallenging circumstances, Henderson State University'sadministration, faculty, and staff worked tirelessly to ensure asmooth graduation ceremony for the class of 2020 and 2021. Theuniversity held a virtual graduation ceremony in May 2020 for thegraduates of 2020. However, the university canceled the ceremony forthe graduates of 2021, promising an in-person ceremony in December2021.
The ceremony, whichtook place on December 11, 2021, was a momentous occasion for thegraduates of 2020 and 2021. The ceremony, held in the Garrison CenterGrand Ballroom, was traditional yet unique, owing to the pandemicprotocols that were still in place at the time.
The ceremony beganwith the procession led by the faculty and administrators. Amidstapplause and cheers, the graduates of 2020 and 2021 followed,elegantly dressed in their gowns and caps. The ceremony featuredspeeches from the President of Henderson State University, theStudent Government Association President, and the Guest Speaker,James T. Dyke. James T. Dyke, a Henderson alumnus and philanthropist,urged the graduates to embrace change and pursue their dreamsrelentlessly.
