Marymount UniversityGraduates Celebrate Academic Success
On May 11th, 2019,Marymount University held their 68th annual commencement ceremony atthe EagleBank Arena in Fairfax, Virginia. Graduates from the schoolsof Arts and Sciences, Business and Technology, Education and HumanServices, and the Malek School of Health Professions, donned theircaps and gowns to celebrate their academic success.
The ceremony beganwith a warm welcome from the President of Marymount University, Dr.Irma Becerra. She emphasized the importance of the graduates’achievements, and encouraged them to continue to strive towards theirgoals. The keynote speaker, Dr. Liza Wilson Durant, a 1996 Marymountalumna and an alumna of the Malek School of Health Professions, alsooffered inspiring words to the graduates. She spoke about her ownjourney, and how she overcame adversity to become a successful doctorand educator.
The ceremony alsofeatured the presentation of honorary degrees to two distinguishedindividuals who have made significant contributions to their fields:Sister Carol Keehan, the former President and CEO of the CatholicHealth Association, and Dr. John DeGioia, the President of GeorgetownUniversity.
As the graduates’names were called, they walked across the stage to receive theirdiploma covers, marking the end of their academic journey atMarymount University. The atmosphere was filled with excitement andpride as families and friends watched their loved ones receive theirdegrees.
One of the mostemotional moments of the ceremony was when the graduates took thetraditional turning of the tassel, signifying their officialgraduation from Marymount University. They had completed their yearsof hard work, dedication, and perseverance, and were now ready totake on the world.
After the ceremony,the graduates and their families gathered for a reception onMarymount’s campus. Graduates took pictures with friends, family,and faculty members, and reflected on their time at MarymountUniversity. The university had provided them with not only a qualityeducation, but also with life-long friendships and skills that willbenefit them in their future endeavors.
Marymount Universitycontinues to provide a rigorous and challenging curriculum tostudents, as well as opportunities for personal growth anddevelopment. The graduates of the Class of 2019 have set a highstandard for academic achievement that will inspire future classes ofMarymount University.
